He ends up working with Luz after Kikimora tries to kill him when he is sent to gather palismen.
Luz is emotionally hurt, telling Hunter that he is not her friend as he is just "The Golden Guard". Hunter then reveals his name to her, and defends her from Kikimora when she starts attacking them, allowing Luz to get away safely with the palismen. After learning what he is, Hunter camps out at Hexside, collecting books on grimwalkers and having Flapjack find food for him. After seeing his poor living conditions, Gus gives Hunter his sandwich as Principal Bump calls an assembly when Adrian Graye Vernworth, the head of the illusion coven, delivers a decree that all witches must be placed in a coven before the Day of Unity. When Adrian reveals he is going to force the students into covens, Gus unintentionally creates a school wide illusion and Hunter arrives and drags Gus away.
